We live 'out in the sticks' and as a consequence are not really concerned with passwords on the wi-fi, but maybe paranoia has got the better of me so want to do something about it.

Netgear DG834G
Plusnet ISP

Where to start? WEP/WAP/Wop/Woop? :(

You'll need to log on to the router and see what protection is available. There's some info here under Default Settings that may help

just type 192.168.0.1 this is the default netgear one
the default username and password will be admin, and password
then under the 'Wireless' options will be several options, set them to WPA2 AES (this is the best and only version that hasn't been hacked yet if you have v3 or better of the router then you can select this.) then type in a Passkey/PSK/password (whichever they call it) and click apply,
it is best to do this while connected via ethernet cable as otherwise you will be kicked off the WiFi now, to reconnect just select your WiFi network in windows and type in the Password when asked, that's it.

PS if your default username and password were admin and password I would change the password of that while you are at it, you can then write it down and keep it near the router along with the PSK.

you can also read the manual here http://support.netgear.com/product/DG834Gv4 wireless security is page 2-2

    Choose the 4th option, WPA2 :-D

If you have any issues with devices not WPA2 capable, as in they won't connect, switch to the 5th option.
  • Thanks! That's extremely helpful!
