Can I send an e-mail and know when it has been opened?

I've been told this is possible but I cannot see any way of doing this with yahoo mail.

You can't do this with Yahoo Mail. It is possible with something like Outlook and receipts but even then it isn't guaranteed as the user can either tell the mail program not to send it or the mail program doesn't send receipts (like Yahoo mail).

There are complicated ways of telling if someone has opened your email, like embedded unique images that are then tracked (which is what most marketing emails try to do) but is painful if you really just want the occasional receipt ...

I have set up my Outlook account. Where do I find out if the sent e-mail has been opened? Or how do I set up my e-mail account to send this request?

you can't ever retrospectively see if an email has been read, bare in mind that any type of 'read receipt' is entirely dependant on the receiver allowing the receipt to be sent or allowing images to be shown.

Many e-mail clients are set-up so the user can block this type of communication. I have mine blocked because I consider it to be a security issue.
I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us.

Do you mean you have set up Outlook, which is part of M$ Office, to handle your e mails from your ISP?
    Or
Do you mean that you have an account with the new M$ webmail service which rather confusingly, is called Outlook?

    :o

+1 Even the embedded image method is no longer reliable because almost all email clients (desktop and web based) will not download and show images in an email unless the user specificially clicks to show the images or the sender is in some sort of trusted senders list.

As for Outlook read receipts, most people will see this as a bit of an invasion of privacy and won't allow the receipt to be sent.
