Read the post you've quoted again. Yes the available balance is there to spend. But that is all that's available to spend. ie spend more than that and risk charges or a decline.

And YOU read the original post, since that is what the whole discussion is about. The OP has transferred £200 into their current account to cover a transaction of £200, so they are not spending more than they have, it is a timing issue.
  • This is still an ongoing issue. I have been charged 0.02p for an "unauthorised overdraft". I have gone over and over my statement, and at no point can I see where my cleared balance would have been overdrawn.

Personally, I think if a bank wants to charge you for being overdrawn, they need to show on your statement exactly WHERE they are determining you to be overdrawn.

So far I have sent them 3 x secure messages back and to trying to get to the bottom of this. It is the second time it has happened and the first time I let it drop but now it has become a matter of principle.

I am only going off the information they are showing me on my bank statements, so if that is wrong, then they need to change their statements to show the EXACT position of an account at any given time including cleared balance and uncleared balance.

This has now become a matter of principle, how many other people are they charging 1p and 2p etc for being overdrawn and how many of those people will ever bother to take them to task over it?

I cannot see how this could have happened with the current charges used by Santander.

If you are overdrawn you will be charged £1.00 for an authorized and £5.00 for the use of an unauthorised overdraft per day (limited to 20 days per months. Overdraft charges for the last 18 months (maybe even longer) have been based on that flat fee model and no longer do reflect the amount and the actual interest rate of the overdraft.

There is also a buffer of £12.00, so even if you go overdrawn but do not exceed the amount of the buffer, no charges will apply.
