So what router have you got then?
Why not try some of the suggestions?
Going to BT maybe something you'll regret, maybe not today maybe not tomorrow but soon and for the rest of your life.
Router is a sagem black box, looks like a sky + box, its about two years old, works fine except for poor wireless signal, have this afternoon had a chat with Sky, they are insistent i cannot use another router besides there own, i did manage to get my log on password and username via a bit of software this afternoon, did try to connect up using this and an old Actiontec wireless router, would not work, router is about 8 years old so may be its not compatible.Sky offered me a newer N router for £35, but no guarantee it would be better. Not tech minded enough to start adding repeaters etc. Whats wrong with BT then, neighbor has been with them for broadband for years no problem, and we never have problems with them and the phone line or acccount

    Have you tried inSSIDer?

BT expensive, overloaded network, poor customer service.

Does that mean i can just add an additional router, at present the sky router is behind the TV, as thats the master BT socket, and only phone socket in the house, main pc is upstairs and fed by ethernet cable from sky router, can i connect my another wireless router to this then

Try moving the router out from behind the TV.
How do I add a signature?

You are right of course, should have spotted that, its no wonder the range is limited.

I got a new 'N' router(silver/black) from Sky and mounted it high up away from other electrical equipment. That worked for me!

I also got an extender as mentioned in my last post which takes the signal on outside to the garden. The Netgear Extender was set up in 30 seconds just plug & play. It uses the same passcode as printed on the Sky Router itself.

The 'n' router will be better if that's not what you have, it's hard to tell because they all look like little Sky boxes.
Anyway, problems for wireless routers are walls and metal objects, and microwaves, so as above, the TV won't be helping.
In line with penryn above, install WiFi Analyzer on your Nexus 7. It'll tell you what networks it picks up, what strength they are, and critically, what channel they are on. There are, like, 13 channels. You want to be at least 2 channels away from everyone else. If you're on the same channel (eg 6) as someone else, it'll interfere. In that example, you'd want to be in channel 4 or below, or 8 or above.
