recording programs and pin number

I have recorded a series of gardening progs on free sat and some of them I can watch but some ask for a pin number.
It is a panasonic dvd player and recorder.
Why do I need to put in a pin number and what would the number be ?

Did you set the parental lock or anti-theft code when you got the machine new?
Or if you got it second-hand, did the previous owner?
Look up the manual for the procedure to reset it to factory settings.
If you don't have the manual, google "panasonic (model number) manual" to find an online version0
