Just been looking on the London transport site and as l will use the underground now it looks like l would be better off getting a travel card off peak hours for the day so me and the missus can use it during the day and in the evening but l don't understand the different prices and zones...
Like l've already said l'm staying near kings cross and will use it during the evening to go to oxford circus, but during the day would like to go to the london eye are these different zones...
Say for instant l get 2 travel cards off peak hours for zone one at £7.00 each and l go into another travel zone which l notice on the charts are more price on the cards, would l have to pay anything or not ... How does this system work on travelcards and what are areas are different zones...0 -

Make it simple. Just use an Oystercard in case you stray out of zones 1 and 2."If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools"

If you look at this map, it shows which stations are in which zone. Kings Cross and Waterloo, (for the London Eye), are in Zone 1
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/standard-tube-map.pdf
A Travelcard for Zone 1 off peak is £7.00. If you are going further out, a Zone 1 - 4 Travelcard is £7.70. The price is the same as an Oyster card, but you must aleady have the Travelcard for the zones you go through, with an Oyster card, you swipe, or touch in, at each station and it automatically records the journey and the cost, up to the daily cap of £7.00 (or £7.70 )
If you go on a bus, the zones don't count, the Travelcard/Oyster card is valid on all London buses.0 -

Sorry if l sound a bit thick as l can't understand the above comment.
So l will need a travelcard for zone 1 off peak which will cost £7.00 for the day, in this time l can use the underground in zone 1 and buses in zone 1 without anymore costs.. is this correct..
Now this next bit l don't understand you say.......
The price is the same as an Oyster card, but you must aleady have the Travelcard for the zones you go through, with an Oyster card,..
So why would l need a oystercard if l have a travelcard already for zone 1.
Is a oystercard £7.00 and do the same as a travelcard.. CONFUSED:o0 -
Just get an Oystercard, it's by far the simplest method of paying for travel in London.

With a travelcard you must have the card before you travel, Oyster is pay-as-you-go.
A zone 1 travelcard is a physical ticket, valid for that day (if it is a one day travelcard - there are ones for longer periods), for the off peak times (after 9.30) It cost £7.00 and is valid for travel between all the underground stations shown in zone 1 on the map.
You can get travelcards for further out, eg. a zone 1 - 4 travelcard which is valid for travel between all the underground stations in zones 1, 2, 3, & 4 and costs £7.70.
Buses are not covered by zones, a travelcard is valid on all London buses
An Oyster card is an electronic card, which you 'load' with cash. Each station has a reader which you have to 'touch' with the Oyster card when you go in and when you go out. The system automatically works out the fare for that journey and deducts it from the balance on the card, if you make several journeys in one day, it 'caps' the amount deducted to the same amount you would have paid for those journeys with a travelcard.
Oyster cards are ideal for locals, for single fares it can work out cheaper with Oyster than paying cash.
A travelcard you can buy on the day, an Oyster card you have to buy in advance (£3.00 I think).0 -
It's just over a mile and half, it will take about twenty minutes to walk. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0

Permit me to correct you; Oyster cards can be bought either over-the-counter or from vending machines at some tube stations, including Kings Cross.0 -
Ok, l have bought 2 oyster cards and paid £5 deposit on these.
l put £15 on each card, will this be enough to last 2 days travelling in Zone 1 or 2...
You mention the cards are capped at £7.00 in these zones is this also if l use it in peak hours..
Also just a question... if l had enough on the card to let me travel in zone 1 and lets me through the gate how does the machine not know l might be travelling to further zones..0 -
It should be enough but you might need a little more for peak travel (£8.40 instead of £7 for zones 1-2)
It doesn't know whether you are travelling to further zones - it finds that out when you get there and leave the station. It will let you go into the red a limited amount as long as you top up before making another journey0
