hi all could anyone help to explain why me and my partner have just recieved a payment of £726.44 child tax credit that we were not expecting. we are usualy paid £215.35 every 4 weeks and the last payment was on 11th july. this overpayment has been credited on 26th july so we were not expecting it. we sent off the renewal about a month ago and it would be lovely if this was some sort of rebate or something but we obviously dont want to touch it till were sure. I thought if they underpaid you they adjusted the payments for the next year? can anyone shed any light? we will ring them on monday.

This could be a 'balancing' payment. Did you estimate the income for last year's tax credit award and then earn a little less perhaps? In any case, the best thing to do is to await the paperwork that should arrive in a few days and go through it thoroughly to ensure the figures printed are those you provided - sometimes errors happen and income figures aren't correctly input into the system at the tax credit office and this can obviously alter payments considerably.
If it has got an incorrect figure then notify them immediately - some people labour under the misapprehension that it will be written off as a tax credit office error and they will get to keep it. The onus is on the reciever of the benefit to check the award notice for any mistakes.
Hope that all makes sense and if it is a balancing payment then I hope you get to spend it on a few little luxuries

When your final paperwork comes through it should be in two white envelopes.
The first will be a final decision on last years entitlement, if there was an underpayment in that year it will say so on the paperwork and it will also state when it will be paid to you (this should correspond to any payments made)
The second envelope will be your claim for the coming year again this will have any payments due wrote on it wilth the dates payments will be made.
If the payment you have recieved doesn't match to any of the letters I would phone them to inquire keeping record of your conversation, with who and what time0 -
thanks for the replys, will await paperwork. if anything i'd have thought i was over payed as i got a few hours overtime last year that hadnt been expected so my actual earnings were slightly higher than id estimated on the application however it will be great if it is money due to us as this would realy help us out0
