Strange (one off?) clutch/gear issue
Options
Hi all
I live down a very narrow country lane and had to reverse about 150 yards back uphill to make way for an oncoming vehicle with trailer. All was well till after I had got home, unloaded my shopping then tried to put the car in first to park it up. In fact it wasn't engaging in reverse either.
The gear stick seemed to be going into position ok but all I was getting was revs.
I did actually manage to get it going after leaving it a few minutes and drove with no problems to the local garage thinking however that the clutch might be on the way out (It's a 2004 Peugeot 206).
The garage didn't check it till later that day and couldn't find any problems. And I've done a few miles in it since with no problems.
Is it possible I overheated the clutch? (there was no smell of burning). Someone else said that sometimes the gears mash together. Or could it be a sign that something is on it's way out?
Cheers

Hello Pineapple
One way that you can tell if the clutch is on it's way out is to try and get the car going from stationery starting in 2nd or even 3rd gear. If the car stalls or is difficult to get up speed then the clutch will be the problem and needs replaced. Don't do this often as you will wear the clutch. I know this from experience of my clutch going. PS new clutch can be quite expensive

Do it on a slight incline if you can and you should look for the revs getting high (3-4k) with little acceleration. If the clutch then engages the speed will pick up and that will tell you the clutch is slipping and will need replaced.
Peugeot's dont have the best clutches/gearboxes and it could be simply the clutch has overheated and needed to be cooled down. Check the Peugeot forums as there is usually lots of threads containing problems such as what you have described.0 -
Don't take this the wrong way, but are you one of these people that slips the clutch and hammers the sh*t out of the engine when reversing? Perhaps out of nerves?“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

What ever a gear providing it is too high the car should STALL if you try this, 3rd on the flat, 2nd up hill etc, the thing is the car should stall if all is OK, do it once only, or it won't be ok.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
