Hi all. Need a new router. Talk Talk have told me my router is over 5years old so no good now!!?They will send me a free one if I sign up for another 18 months. Or £70 to buy. A. I do not wish to sign up for another 18 months, I am now out of contract with Talk Talk. Or they will send me same router for £70. This seems some what expensive.
I run a desk top and two laptops and occasional mobile.
Any help or suggestions please would be very welcome.

You can use whatever router you wish, including cheap TpLink etc.. ones (for example: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/tp-link-td-w8951nd-wireless-adsl2-modem-router-10991896-pdt.html )

(I have never used one of those, just picked the cheapest from PcWorld)

The settings you need are here: http://help.talktalk.co.uk/app/answers/detail/a_id/1445/~/talktalk-router-settings

I've had two TP links and both have developed faults within 6 months so I personally would avoid those.

Search Amazon.co.uk for a Zoom Adsl modem router, just picked up one for around £37.

Beauty is with Amazon, their returns are awesome so if you have an issue you're pretty much covered for a hassle free refund etc.

Or, if you're interested in being able to monitor & tweak your line, ebay is great for picking up routers that work with DMT and/or Routerstats, so look for D-Link DSL-2640B or 2740B, or netgear DG834GT, any of those three can be had for a few quid and, combined with DMT or RS, will help you out no end :)

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
  • +1 for the Netgear suggestion, also worth looking out for a DG834G (V4) or DG834PN as these can also be "tweaked".

Are they saying "It's no good" because it no longer works ......or because they want to trap you back into an 18 month contract ?

You do realise that any of the internet providers will give you a new router if you sign up with them (and not all lock you in for as long as 18 months)

Well I have a TP-Link and my son also has one, with a TP-Link Range Extender. All are over 2years old and working fine.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.
