New front door

I had a quote for a new UPVC half glazed front door and it was £725. I thought a door would cost me about £400 !!! I've never had a replacement door only replacement windows!

Our current front door is uPVC but has been there since before we moved in 17 years ago.

We thought we were better off replacing it as we paid £120 for a new mechanism a couple of years ago, plus OH had to change the lock after the keys stopped working.

Now it seems to have dropped as it no longer shuts if you just push it and you have to lift it a bit to get it to lock.

If it's just not shutting properly have you asked about getting it adjusted to fit correctly again? Considerably cheaper than replacing it of course!

Strangely it is now closing properly again. OH tried to see if he could adjust it etc. but to no avail but the weather cooled and the door now shuts. It faces the same way it's always faced and never not worked before in the heat!

Our door has 'secret' adjusting points that we just hadn't noticed , but the guys that installed it just unscrew a screw or pop off a plastic cover and then do the adjusting..even the hinges are adjustable . Our old door would swell up in the heat and then be fine again when it cooled down..

  • seems very expensive to me, by us they advertise locally to supply 2 doors and fit front and back £695, were in the birmingham area.
  • hm try this site poppy, I found them they have pricing online, at least you have another quote to compare.
  • Hi just noticed this review and needed to mention that I'd research a little further if I was you.

PVC doors are old news now as I have just had a new composite door fitted. These are a lot more secure type of doors and they are a lot nicer than boring white doors. (I got a bright red door).

I'm also told it keeps at lot more cold out because they are so chunky.

I paid £850 for mine and I can honestly say it has changed our house completely, the company I used a company called Global door it was ordered online and they done everything.

Check the facts if you decide to change.

I did consider composite but as my front door is actually inside my porch (I have a fully enclosed porch with glass sliding doors and two side windows) I don't think it's worth paying the extra for as it's not so much of a statement and the energy efficiency is okay as it's a secondary door!

Our house is a trad. 50s Semi and doesn't seem to have a door style.

Composite doors are good, I would recommend them as well. They certainly seem to be a lot better made and I agree are worth the extra bit of money you pay for them. We had a draft coming through until we had ours replaced. Cant tell you how much its made a difference, but then the old one was in such a state that any new door would have been good!

We used Double Glazing on the Web which is who PeterPan mentions above. Their site is good as it gives a price online to compare others with, but we ended up going with them anyway.
