Fitting Carbon Brushes in Washing Machine Motor

Can anyone tell me the consequences of fitting the carbon brushes in a washing machine motor the wrong way round, i.e. the sharp edge making contact with the commutator rather than full contact being made. The symptoms of the machine, ie. the drum not rotating, indicated new brushes were required and when I was replacing sure enough the brushes were worn down. However, I still have a machine that seems to be working apart from the drum not rotating. I cannot be sure I did fit them the correct way round. Can anyone advise me before I go ahead and order a new machine. Thanks

Are the brushes something like this : -41PJ2tisOQL._SL500_AA300_.jpg
I can't see how this type of brush could be fitted the wrong way round - doubtless someone on here will say if they are "handed".
Are you sure that one or both is not stuck in the sleeve which holds them.
    Forgotten but not gone.
