Your wording was 'The law says 20 mins after a six hour block of work' This is incorrect, the law actually states

The guidance to employees supplied by the government states This is the guidance that is followed by both DTI & HSE and no doubt any ET would use it as well.
Still not 6 hours though, its MORE than 6 hours so you would need to be expecting to work a shift of 6 hours 1 minute to be entitled to the 20 minute break sometime through the shift

  • Goes to show how different folks are. I would love half hour lunch and finish half hour early.

In my oh business 1 hour is forced - but he will never get it, just a way to make them work till 5.30

I agree, I have to work 8.30-5.30 every day as it includes a compulsory one hour lunch break. I work in the middle of nowhere so there's nowhere to go and nothing to do once you've eaten lunch. I rarely take more than half hour

Sit in the car, read book/paper/radio/sleep - take the full break.

As others have said, if you are expected to work more than six hours you must be given at least a twenty minute break. It can't be taken at the beginning or end of your shift but must be part way through. It must be in one block, you must be able to leave your place of work and your employer can dictate when you take it (as long as they comply with the above rules).

It is 20 minutes if the work period is expected to last 6 hours or more, not AFTER 6 hours.

Also the break can be paid or unpaid, employer's decision. Although paying for the break is very rare

it is last more than 6 hours, a 6 hours work period does not need a break

I work a 8 hour day with 30 mins unpaid in the middle of the day as my break, i.e. 7.5 hours.

I work for the public sector - in college.

Blimey, how many breaks do you expect when only working 7.5 hours!?

He can fetch a drink and use the loo, which other employers may restrict to break times only, and he has 10 mins more than the statutory requirement. There is no issue to take up... unless the previous breaks were contractural but even they can be amended with notice.

I work about 0730-630pm and don't tend to take a break, but then again I am self employed.

My employee generally works 0730-1700 and gets 30 mins break.
