£800 paid into my current account - but no idea who from?

I check my account balance regularly through Barclays Pingit 'droid ap and noticed last night that my bank balance had gone up £800 exactly.
At first I thought I had been paid (end of the month), and as I've only recently started at my new job I thought it would probably be that. Then it occured that £800 was far too much for the work I've carried out so far, so I checked my statement.
Instead of saying the normal "Pets at Home", "Santander" etc to indicate where the payment is from, all I have is "IPA ANMF Cheque Is" and the reference is my account sort code and number followed by "BGC".
I phoned by bank (Barclays) who couldn't shed anymore light on it, but told me not to worry - but that doesn't really solve my issue of - is it my money? Should it be there? etc.
I've confirmed from my current employer, and my previous that this is not money I am owed and said salary payments are due in the next couple of days.
Any ideas?? I've seen a few other topics of a similar sort on here - but with no resolution or outcome.
I'm at a bit of a loss!

If you don't know and have not had a letter about it, I'd tend to leave the money there thinking someone has credited the wrong account.
(BGC = Bank Giro Credit?)
If its still there in a few weeks, move it to a savings account.0 -
Do you or have you had an Abbey National mortgage at all - have you perhaps made a claim for PPI?0

Just to avoid any potential issues in the future (e.g. being accused of money laundering/fraud) I would ring them and state that you believe that the cheque was deposited to the incorrect account.
I would be very surprised if they could not find out further details.0 -
I'd write a recorded delivery letter to the applicable department saying you don't recognise where the money came from, and ask them to reply with details of it if possible.
If you ring them and there's any issues in the future, they'll probably just claim they never received a phone call off you..0 -
My mother once had 1k in her account and after checking with her bank twice about it and reassuring them it wasn`t hers they investigated only to find it was indeed an error and someone had put it into her bank account instead of their own.
SO don`t touch it and go back to the bank and ask them to check it out as you are unaware of this being yours! Ensure you get names of any bank staff you talk too.
They should never of told you over the phone not to worry, they should of filed it and said they`d be looking into it for you.DebtFree FEB 2010!Slight blip in 2013 - Debtfree Aug 2014 :j

I currently have my local branch manager looking into it for me, although they don't think they'll find out where it came from.
I have a current Abbey Mortgage, but I haven't had or made a claim for PPI. Hm, the plot thickens.0 -
Hi, I just found this thread because I have the same in my account and the responses have made me realise that it's a refund on an overpayment to my Santander mortgage. I hope this helps you and thank you to everybody else for your replies as it helped me.0
