Window Cleaner problem

Back in April 2012 I had a cold calling salesman knock on the door for UK window cleaners. I agreed to a initial clean on the 17th May 2012 (as I had just had a clean by regular cleaner), of which I could cancel at anytime up to 24 hours before and I did not sign a contract or agree to anything else.
A week later, out of the blue I came home to a slip through the door saying UK Window Cleaners had done a clean and wanted their money. I rang the office and told them this was done without my permission and that I actually was planning to cancel the inital clean after second thoughts. I cancelled the service and told them I would nto be paying for this unauthorised clean. I now keep getting automated calls reminding me to pay. I have tried to contact their office but they have nobody on the phone only a message service which is unanswered. I did get a response by mail some weeks back saying I should have expected to be flexible with dates, even 3 weeks before the agreed clean date and that payment must be made. They have now sent a letter stating the next step is legal proceedings against us and have added £40 interest to our bill? Any advice anyone please?

Tell 'em where to shove it.
3 weeks before the date you initially agreed is ridiculous and unreasonable.
Follow their usual cancellation procedure now as if they hadn't done the clean and ignore everything else. Let a judge decide (although it's highly unlikely it will ever get that far).0
