Life Assurance - With Critical Illness Cover???

Ive read the Life Assurance page of this site but I see no advice on whether I should be taking Critical Illness Cover or its value.
In the orginal artcile the advice seems cut and dry, you die you get paid. Obviously with critical illness cover its no where near as cut and dry.
Ive been searching for the best price and if critical Illness cover is included it really does whack up the price.
For example, my current situation I pay £44.50 a month for joint life assurance for any death, terminal illness and critical illness cover. Im covered for £133K. I have the mortgage protection option so the cover value decreases as I pay off my mortgage each year.
Now, if I just get life cover on its own my first quote was £24 a month and for a staggering £278k, so almost half the price for more doubling the covering value.
So it shows how much the critical illness cover is really costing me.....however is it worth it?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

the stats are around 1 in 6 suffering a claimable critical illness before the age of 65. That compares to 1 in 5 with death.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
