River Cottage have some fab looking courses, from memory they do beach/rockpool foraging, line fishing and preparing seafood etc. They are expensive and too far away for me, otherwise I would love it! ike JackieO, the local college have had to put up costs due to funding cuts and a lot of the interesting courses have been scrapped altogether.

i looked at their courses recently as i was down that way. but £180 for a one day course to learn how to make bread, was more expensive than buying a lifetimes worth of bread from my local artisan bakery that charges £3 for a 400g loaf

It's a while since I lived in the UK, but I remember the local authority nigh school classes well. I did lots of things, editing for relevant, Indian cooking, sewing, dressmaking and car maintenance.

My first ever job was as artist's model for a local authority night school art class. (No I wasn't naked, that would not have sold any places!)

It's a shame they are closing them down.

I did an 'Introduction to Sewing' course earlier in the year to learn how to use a machine, i'd only been able to do basic hand-stitching until then. This was followed by a basic pattern-cutting course and i'm starting another sewing & dressmaking course in September :j

I also did a one day soft furnishings course on cushions and i'm hoping to do the curtains one soon. In feb next year i'm doing a one-day workshop on making Rag rugs.

Crochet i taught myself watching Youtube vids (Art of Crochet by Teresa & The Knitwitch are fab).

There's a sewing course near me starting in September but I can't find anywhere selling cheap fabric. Even the market is charging £5 a metre for polycotton - 100% cotton is more! I do wish I could sew tho as it would be useful for altering charity shop finds.

Thanks for the tip on the crochet Youtube videos - I will look those up!
  • Dandy-candy, if you don't mind what your practice pieces look like, have you tried charity shops for fabric, tablecloths or sheets? If you get 100% white cotton you could always put it on a hot wash first too.

I use this place http://www.remnanthouse.co.uk/ because they often have stuff on sale for £3-4 a metre, but then you have to pay postage.

I have tried crochet many times.. I am just useless at it.. I did soft furnishings and dressmaking.

What kind /design of fabrics are you after? I have a huge stash I am downsizing really cheap just to get rid.. I have most of it on a fb group and more being added this week as I am desperate for space in my house. I am happy to share the groups with you if you are interested.. there are lots of ladies selling fabric and yarns etc.

Pigpen, would you mind sharing the group with me please? I am after some fabric to make a cover for my kenwood chef.

The only courses around here seem to be basic maths and English. Not my cup of tea.

I would love to take courses on various crafts (knitting, sewing, arty stuff, crochet), dressmaking, baking, cooking, gardening and soap making. Basically anything home, country or craft related!
  • Oh and i would love, love, love to do a diy course. Neither DH or I can do anything really, we have to ask my Dad or get someone in. And seeing as we have just moved into a bigger house which needs complete re-decoration i think it would be money well spent!

i am thinking about taking a 1 day course in the basics of car maintenance.
Apart from actually helping me to save money and become more 'in the know' about cars, i am also hoping i might find a lovely young man ;)
