I recently bought a camera lens which turned out to have a large amount of fungus on the rear element. It was described as unmarked, working order, hardly used etc. Seller has a shop but I'm not sure if they're a business.
The seller agreed to refund but doesn't pay return postage. I know it's wise to send special delivery but is it compulsory? It's about twice the cost of 1st class and I'm already annoyed at having to pay to send something back for a fault that should have been spotted before listing! Is it safe to send it via normal post and just claim off RM if it doesn't arrive? (it's only about £40)

If you send it back normal post and it's lost, what will you do? You need to check if cameras are covered normal post, I don't know offhand. If they are then first/second class covers you for £46 with your certificate of posting.0

It's well inside the £46 for normal post but how do you prove it didn't arrive if you didn't use a signed service? I know SD is the best but I begrudge paying 6+ to return something that was clearly faulty before it was sold. I paid £35 + £5 postage but with the fungus inside, it's basically worthless.
I wouldn't normally buy a lens on eBay unless I could collect it but in this case I was impatient! Serves me right (no more buying 2nd hand photo gear off eBay for me!) :wall:0 -
There is one claim.
Either you want to win the dispute and not claim, in which case send it Special Delivery.
Or you want to ensure it is adequately sent so that you can claim fom Royal Mail, should it go missing.
Most people get confused and worried. It's one or the other. If its covered by standard mail and less than £46 in value, it's a no brainer.0
