Fraudulent card use at petrol station?

Hi All,

I saw a jaw dropping example of possible fraudulent card use at the petrol station today and my moral compass is swinging all over the show as to whether I should do anything about it or keep my beak out - Partial vent I suppose! ;)

I went into the petrol station today, and the woman in front of me in the queue asked if the clerk could swipe her card to pay for her petrol instead of entering her PIN as she didn't know it (alarm bells?) The clerk asked her if she could sign for it and she said "No, it's my fiancee's card and it's got his signature on the back, obviously I can't copy it". The clerk then put the transaction through using this card, and the women signed her own signature on the slip!

Surely this is massively fraudulent?! Should I write and tell the company that their clerks are allowing this to happen or shall I mind my own business? Opinions please :A

As somebody who's OH was victim of theft and attempted fraudulent use of stolen card I would definitely say something. I'd have probably made a note of car number as well and contacted local police.
In our case the guy was caught because of what he tried to do at the petrol station. He ran off but was picked up from car details and CCTV image

I would mind your own business. Its frankly nothing to do with you.

Worse case scenario it was fraud, the owner will report it, and the garage will lose the cash. I believe banks don't insure in store transactions that are not verified by chip and pin.

The garage will then take their own action.

Yeah, she should have checked the signature as we aren't allowed to use cards in other peoples names in this country. Once being told the card isn't the persons she's serving she should have refused the transaction and asked for alternative payment. (Lovely issue if that's the only form of payment the woman has as then they have to treat it as a non-payer though. Probably why the cashier didn't do anything about it.).

I would definitely have spoken to the manager or spoken to customer services and got as much information as I could (number plate - discretely, time, cashier name, which till, branch etc) if I couldn't speak to management on site.

They will authorise and pay the company if they have rang the merchant and obtained a transaction authorisation code. In this case they would be refused payment. The card holder can basically dispute this transaction now even if it was his fiancee.

I'm surprised the cashier put it through to be honest I'd probably mention it to the manager if I were OP.

Frankly it has something to do with him and every one of us. Who do you think ends up paying for the costs incurred by criminal activity? The rest of us one way or another!

Write a letter of complaint to them. But this is not a yes or no question, if it was being used fraudulently you could have put yourself in the line of danger by involving yourself.
Although you should have had to as the transaction should not have been put through.

The employee deserves a disciplinary for exposing their employer to such risk.

So the member of staff gets fired and claims benefits. That's cheaper for us!

I don't like the fact we are becoming a nation of busy bodies!

It doesn't sound like he rang anyone
