Renting/storage

Hi all

We are possibly moving to Sweden for six months, and have been told by letting agents that we would need to advertise the house unfurnised in order to become more successful. I have just looked up The yellow storage company and they are quoting £250 for four weeks

Anybody know of a cheaper company etc? Never rented out before so any advice welcomed.

Thanks

MM

How much space will you need? I believe typical storage rentals are around £15-20/sq ft per annum but this must depend on quality and location - so on that basis if you needed about 200 sq ft then their price is ok.

Any idea how much harder it would be to rent the flat out furnished? It sounds like a lot to pay for storage, and how much are you hoping to get in rent?

    Hi

We live in a five bedroomed house and have been quoted from £1300 to £1600 rent a month! The agency said that only 1/25 would require it furnised.

Enough space for a large house's contents.

    Thanks for your replies

When I decluttered to sell I played my local Storage King off against my local Safestore, and Storage King came up far better in price, so they are definitely worth checking out.

Beware their doors though, as they had a faulty roller shutter door which came down and left a tiny dent in the back of my car. They wanted to settle the claim through insurance but I wanted a bit of cash instead so I held them off for 6 months (it helped that their manager turnover was very fast - four managers in 6 months), convinced the fifth manager that Storage King had ignored my regular phone calls and trips to the unit for that period, and threatened to take it further. We settled on £150 cash for a near-invisible dent to an old car :T

There's a store locator on their website.

    cheers,

Depends upon what you want to store and how long for... I found a local farmer who is renting us a huge space in an empty barn for 20 pounds per month. Mind you it isn't heated or completely damp proof so will only be Ok for our less precious stuff over the summer months (hopefully we will have bought somewhere by next winter)!

Then the best I can suggest is to find the three closest storage places to you, go into each one and get prices. Go back to the second cheapest and tell them "XXX is doing it cheaper, what's the best price you can give me" then haggle with the "Come on, you can do a bit better than that" until you are confident you have their best price, certainly until they are now the cheaper one. Go back to the original cheapest and start haggling again until a deal is almost complete, but don't sign up... tell them you just have to ok it with the OH and you promise to call them in half an hour if they hold the price. It's at this point I always go back to the original most expensive one and say "XXX are doing it at this price, YYY can beat that with this price... what can you do?". If they beat it then fantastic but if they laugh then I can be fairly sure I have a good deal.

    Two points to note:

    1. storage places mark the prices up to be haggled down, just like double glazing... that's how the 'discounts' can appear so good.

    2. Always make sure you get a fully inclusive quote. You don't want your haggling scuppered by finding that one place includes VAT and one doesn't, or that one insists that you use their insurance and one doesn't.

    cheers,
    Martin

Have you thought about putting it on the market furnished to see if there are any takers first?

Ignore the agent & go find another one who will help you, they are talking crap!

It is just as easy to rent a house furnished as it is unfurnished. The only thing you need to worry about is valuables & furniture you paid a lot of money for as it may not be well taken care of.
