price for installing new sockets & moving light switch

Hi,

I'm after a rough price for installing new sockets - I need 8 in the kitchen and one in a bedroom

I also need one socket removing. Two sockets can just be lowered - i'm guessing the work is easier for that?

The whole kitchen is being replastered, so making a mess of walls isn't an issue.

I also need a separate circuit put in for an oven. Oven is electric, not decided whether I’m going for gas or electric hob. There is a light switch on the wall I’m getting removed, so this needs to be moved also.

I’ll also need an electric shower fitted in - we can do this ourselves but does a registered electrician have to connect this?

I had a few builders around to quote for other work, the one that was 3 times the price for that work said £60 per socket plus VAT - but as they are so overpriced for the other work, I'm guessing they are also overpriced for the sockets

£ 60 per socket isn't unusual for a one off but you really want a price for the job. Best to get a sparks round to quote rather than rely on a builders wet finger.

Re the shower if its a new shower and a new circuit absolutely! Not only does he have to connect it he has to design and install the circuit himself.

Did you not ask the builder about the WM enclosure?

    Cheers

No, the builder is just doing the wall knock through and new roof

The builder is coming around again tomorrow, this time with his electrician though. builder advising on all the work that needs doing, whether or not he is doing it (i.e. i need plumber to disconnect certain pipes before wall can go and electrics put in before plastering)

I'll see what this electrician prices up I guess

You may also need some work to the fuse board - depending on how old it is. Any new sockets and and cables concealed in walls now require RCD protection at fuse board.

This is quite a bit of work.

Allow £45 per item or so, but make sure the electrician can certify the work.

There may be building regs required for the wall coming down, it depends where you are. In Scotland a building warrant will generally be required for the wall bit (plus the electrics certified)

You should use a competent person for the work, links below
    In Scotland:
    Individuals registered;

    Companies

hi, yeah there are building regs - I'm in england, just had to give Notice to the council. had an architecht to drawings for the RSJ etc etc

My builder is bringing the electrician he works with around tonight so he can quote me for the work

thanks to my lovely builder, the electrician is going to quote me at trade prices :)

Thanks to my builder being able to dig out my toilet plumbing, I've also reconfigured the layout and now one less socket and two sets of sockets are vertical to each other, so easier/quicker to put in

will update this when I have a price

This doesn't really mean anything! He might be an expensive electrician!

So.... come back to us with the prices and description of work. Make sure he will provide you with certificates and will notify building control (as the work is in a kitchen)

    Good luck

Maybe, but my builder has taken pity on me and getting me extra savings where he can. He's giving me a toilet, basin and electric shower he's just taken out of his own home :)

After the electrician went, my builder was saying he'd guess the figure would be somewhere in the region of £500. I'm waiting for the quote - but wondered if that would be a fair price

Changed my layout so it's for:
8 new sockets (6 double, two single)
new fuseboard so all kitchen is on seperate board
    electrics for oven
    electrics for shower
    moving two light switches
    removing a couple of sockets

Electrician is able to certify and provide all certificates etc

That seems reasonable maybe even slightly cheap for the work being carried out. Is the electrician invoicing you direct or going through the builder?

it'll be seperate. the builder just works with a set of guys and if people he's doing building work for want to use them, then he sets it up and pay other trades person direct

he's getting the plumber he uses around at the weekend, whilst i'm away to see if he can match/beat my quote.... wish is good because the plumber i was going to use has stopped reply to my emails
  • final price is £620 - not including the lights

i've chisled out the channels and am screwing the back of the elec boxes on
