Carrying money abroad

I'm going on holiday in May to Turkey for a week, its for the family so i'll probably have to take a couple of hundred pounds, i don't want to take it all in cash for the obvious reasons of incase we were mugged etc

I have heard of travellers cheques but cashing them in seems to be a long process ie person must have passport, some hotels have the facility and also is there a charge?

How do you take your money abroad?

Thanks

You Really On Have A Few Options...

    Credit Card
    Debit Card
    Cash
    Travellers Cheques

I Recommend A Small Amount Of Cash To Get You Thru First Few Days Then Travellers Chqs...if You Lose These They Are Replaced Within 24 Hours, Lose Cash And Its Gone...sad But True. Unless You Have A Nationwide Card...just Keep This For Emergencies.
Thank you to everyone who has helped me MoneySave
  • I take about £100 with me depending on where I am going. If I know theres a cash machine virtually next door to hotel then I will only take what I had left over from last hols (if Euros). I always withdraw from the hole in the wall when I get there - the business rate you get doing that is usually slightly better than what you get here.

Turkey love sterling, so I take cash (make sure you have 1 £10 note per person for your entry visa, NOT £20 for 2).

For a couple of hundred pounds I wouldn't bother with travelers cheques, you pay to buy them then pay to cash them:mad: .

I don't mean to pry are you taking a couple of hundred pounds for the whole family, do you think this will be enough? If you bring extra & its in sterling you don't even need to change it to come home:D .
We budget about £100 per day SC (for a family of 3), less for AI say £50. Somedays we wouldn't spend nearly that, but other days you may hire a car, go on a trip or hit the shops:D

99% of hotels/apts will have a safe box for you to rent in the room, I've never had a problem with cash abroad:D , been pickpocketed in London though:mad: .

I'm off to Turkey on May 4th, 14 nights in the Aegean Dream Holiday Resort Hotel (AI) in Turgutreis on the Bodrum peninsular:j . Where are you going to????

Were off on the 7 may to iclemer or however you spell it lol i honestly don't know how much money we will need, were going SC but i also heard that turkey is quite cheap on food etc and it's me and the other half with my son who's an infant which means i hopefully won't need to spend too much.. ( famous last words )

So does nationwide have a fee for withdrawing and do all atm's accept the card? also is it a debit or credit card from nationwide? i might have to pop in and get one if its that easy.

  • I have a Nationwide cashcard (can't be used as a debit card) which can be used for withdrawing cash out from ATMs. No charge with Nationwide, unlike other cards. Nationwide do debit and cc too - I only use my Nationwide for travelling (don't pay money in regularly) so wasn't given a debit/cc.
Proud to be dealing with my debts

Definitely use Sterling in Turkey, but you would need a small amount of Lira if you plan to use the dolmus or something.

I would NEVER rely on using a cashpoint for my holiday money, what "if" there was a problem with the machine & it swallowed your card:eek: .

You wouldn't have any money till you got home:eek: .

Fine if you know how much you want to take & then have the cashpoint for any extras but not the main cash.

Yes, turkey is cheap. But I still manage to spend about £50 a day all inclusive:mad: & we hardly even drink:mad: But we do hire a car/jeep & go on trips & SHOP
I'm a bit worried about the weather:rolleyes: , last year we went to Olu Deniz in May & that is further south than Turgutreis. We found Olu in May OK, one slightly overcast day but the other 13 were nice. The year before that we were in Olu in June & it was nice & hot.
So fingers crossed that it will be hot enough for me.

Bring some good mozzie spray, 50% Deet spray in Sainsburys £1.99 (own brand I think), little 50ml aerosol. They don't bother me, but they do bother husband & brother-in-law was ate alive last year:( .
