hi just wondered if anyone knows if facebook can delete messages from your account ?

I think they do automatically delete messages from your inbox after a certain amount of time (3 years I think), and I know that they can also delete material which they deem to be offensive or inappropriate from the main site, though don't know if they can do this from your inbox. Its not really clear from your posts whether you are talking about PMs or wall posts though.

There have definitely been reported cases where facebook have removed photos and messages of for example post mastectomy women and stillborn children from the site though without the knowledge or permission of either the person who originally posted them or the person whose wall they were posted on.

I don't think you can delete messages once you have sent them. The only person who can delete them once you've pressed send is the recipient (or possibly facebook themselves if they are against the rules). They will disappear from your inbox though if you block the sender, and I am not sure whether they come back again if you later unblock them.

Facebook can kick you off their site, messages can be deleted if you make a complaint about the sender or your account can get hacked and everything deleted or changed.
