The wee loudspeaker icon thingy on the bottom of the screen keeps vanishing and the volume is on mute. I have to go into control panel every time I switch the pc on. Any way to fix this? it was ok before.

Gexo's answer won't work in windows XP
Try Start >Control panel > Sounds and Audio devices > Volume tab
Now Uncheck Mute and Check Place volume icon in task bar
Obviously OK
