Holiday to Spain - a few months before passport expiry

I am going to Spain with my family in a week but have just noticed my passport expiry is January 13.

Will this be ok for getting there/back? Going for ten days so will have five months left on it by the time I return but have read you may need six?! Seems a bit silly, hopefully someone here knows, as usual! Thanks all

But best to check with the Airline, we wanted to book something on a last minuet deal a couple of years ago and both Thomas Cook and Thomson wanted the passports to be valid for 6months which ours weren't, I know it's not a legal requirement for Europe and maybe Thompson and TC have relaxed their T&Cs since then, but I would think it's better to check with the Airline/Operator.

No problem. We were away in Spain last year with a few weeks left on our daughters passport.

Can airlines impose their own rules that supercede the foreign office?

We went to Spain last year in May, daughters passport expired in JUly, it was fine. I think you needed 6 weeks left from the end of your holiday. They can't expect you to buy a passport 5 months in advance! You paid for the darned expensive thing and it is valid...

Only going on what I was told by 2 travel agents, maybe they were wrong, but surely if an airline or tour operator wanted to say 6 months in their terms and conditions then it's down to them, they wouldn't be breaking any laws.

If you do renew your passport early (possibly up to 9 months) the extra time is added to the new passport. At least it was for us when we really did need the six month window.

This appears to happen at random, unless we were unlucky

My wife and I had consecutive passport numbers and renewed early due to the six month requirement for a country we intended visiting. Wife's passport application included a change of name from her maiden name. My new passport was issued for ten years and the remaining months, wife's arrived a few days later and she just got the 10 years

No you don't, for anywhere within the EU your passport is valid until the day of expiry, there is no requirement to have time left on your passport.
