Credit scoring: why do I always fail?

Any advise please?

I always seem to be declined for cards with decent freebies, such as the new Amex Nectar card; the GE money card; the BMI card ... The reason given is always my credit score. And no: I don't make frequent applications. I did a certain amount of stoozing at one time, but since BT fees came in it has just not been worth my while and so I have virtually stopped.

I have checked my file and there is no adverse information recorded, and of course I am on the electoral roll.

I am middle-aged (nearly 50); married with kids; buying a house on a mortage; and have been at the same address and in the same job for more than three years. According to the free credit score calculator on check my file, I score 926 which is about as high as it comes! True, I don't have a super-high salary (our gross household income is a little over £40,000 pa) but spend less than this: partly because I have a lot of equity in the house.

Is it worth appealing against these decisions? If so, what do I say?

That free credit score is about as useful as tartan paint. And you will very seldom get another reason for being declined, the lenders arent going to say exactly why you were turned down, for obvious reasons.

Do you have other credit cards not being utilised? If you already have a fair bit of available credit not being used this could be the reason why.

I would agree with above poster. Don't just throw unused cards in a drawer but formally close down the accounts.
