  • This makes no sense.

When you tell a council you are leaving their jurisdiction, they ask for details of the new owners/tenants of the property and give you a closing statement. They have no authority for the property in Scotland and wouldn't chase payment for the new property.

Does another family member still live in the property in the South of England, or were there arrears when the family member in question left?

They've sent the family member a baliff letter. Nobody stayed in the property, it was emptied, cleaned and keys were handed back with a letter stating it was vacated. 2 days later the council were renovating the property so they knew it was vacant. I'm unsure if its been rented out since but if so its to new tenants.

There were no arrears on rent or council tax.

They were given notice prior, the letter on the day was to confirm the property was now empty.

sounds like the council tax people have not updated their records with the leave date.

Your opening post seems to imply that the council in England is charging them for the property in Scotland! are you sure that is the address for the applicable property on the bill? they will send any bills to the new address but it should reference which property they are claiming for.

They should contact the council tax people on Monday and confirm the date when they were responsible for the council tax which can be verified with the previous landlord
