Appliances broken outside warrantee, advice please?!

Hello, hopefully someone can help me!
I purchased my kitchen appliances with Homebase with their store card (fully paid within year) about 2years and 6 months ago. My washing machine decided to pack up about a week ago, when you switch it on it trips all the electrics in the house. (it's only used about 2-3 times a week)
A local appliance engineer came to look at it and said it's the motor and as it's a Neff washing machine, which we paid around £700+ for, it will be quite costly to repair and advised me to ask Homebase/Neff to refund/replace.
Also, we have a Rangemaster Oven & Hood and there is rusting (especially on the hood) and lots of marks on the 'stainless steel' which with no amount of cleaning with stainless steel products, I can not get rid of and looks awful!
Homebase have advised they will repair the washing machine, but I would rather have a refund or exchange for a new one to get another warrantee.
Would these problems be covered under the Sale of Goods Act 1979? And as it was purchased using their store card, does this make a difference? I am going to contact Homebase head office (wish me luck!) to ask for replacement or refund but just wanted to be informed of the best way to go about this & points to include. Do I tell them I have had someone out to look at it or will they say they are not Neff approved?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I feel we have bought higher end products thinking we would not have as many problems and feel upset that we are having problems with the appliances which weren't cheap!
Many thanks in advance for any help!

If you bought a car and it broke down after 2 years and 6 months do you think the dealer would replace it with a brand new one?

Homebase's offer to repair the w/m f.o.c. seems reasonable to me....

I agree. Even if the washing machine was covered under an extended warranty they would only normally repair it, not replace it.
