Information for new residents

Hopefully this is the correct section for this -

If you have just moved into a new property and had a leaflet from the local parish council with some useful information what sorts of things would you find useful?

I know people will have different ideas as to what would be useful when they have just moved to an area so just trying to get a wide range of ideas. I would assume information on local schools would have been researched before moving.

Any replies would be welcome.

  • My Parish's Village Association provides a welcome pack with details of village clubs and societies, local Doctors surgery, bin days, contacts for Parish, District and County Councillors and most importantly The Parish Clerk (guess what I do for a living!!!!). I think there might also be a bus timetable and details of the Village website.
I'll let you know if I can remember anything else.

Well I don't know if it's the sort of thing you are looking for but info about local grocery shops or a chemist that stay open till late would be very useful.

Perhaps no's of local cab firms and details of any local clubs to enable people to integrate and get to know others in the same area. Details of the nearest main p.o and the main banks again would be useful. Oh and local dr's surgeries and nhs dentist would be very welcome.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
  • Ours doesn't do anything like that. I would like:
    - Bus details
    - Clubs and activities
    - Churches and services

We live in London and therefore no nice Parish Clerk to hand out leaflets!

We have always left a note for the new people with bin days and location of meters, stopcocks.

Our local Estate Agents do a Christmas contact list for electricians etc and we usually keep and leave that - it also has OOH GP adn hospital numbers.

Similarly wherever we have moved to people have done the same, including champagne and milk in the fridge!

As for what you would want - I think the OP have covered it. I would also like the name of 2-3 local take-away delivery places for the first few nights!

Bin days/recycling details, nearest shop for a pint of milk, nearest PO, local Drs & dentists. Bus timetable does not apply as there aren't any (but it'd be useful to know that?). Internet provider options, local suppliers of oil/LPG/wood.

Yes i would find it very useful!

I have read on here before of people who left their buyers/tenants council leaflets regarding the area and places to visit, favourite recommended take away restaurant details, bin collection details and gp/dentist, sports centres, libraries, travel/cab service etc.

Thank you for all your replies and it is good to see a few of the same things being mentioned such as bin days - something which has been left off the one the local parish is producing.

I'd also like to know where the bins have to be left! Some councils won't empty them unless they are on the pavement, some will come into the garden to get them. Plus instructions on what the local recycling arrangements are - what can and can't be put into the council recycling bin(s), where the local dump (sorry waste centre) is, its opening hours, whether you have to produce proof of being a resident to use it and if so what id is acceptable.
