Sony Vaio VGN-NR21Z Laptop

Options
Good Afternoon,

I have a Sony Laptop which is just under 4 years old, and I am struggling to get it to load up to the welcome screen. It has Windows Vista Home Premium on it.

When loading it it does the window bit but without the windows logo and then loads up a blank screen. Another time there are blue lines across the screen and then aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa all across the screen.

I am assuming its broken and need a new laptop, does anyone have any advice or ideas as its been working fine until yesterday.

Many thanks

Paul

Have you tried booting it up in safe mode?
Have you backed up all your data?
Does it still have the recovery partition/did you make the restore discs?

Any posts are my opinion and only that. Please read at your own risk.

    Hi

Thanks for the replies, I have tried it in safe mode, it sometimes boots up and sometimes doesnt.

I have copied all my data on to an external hard drive yesterday, I usually try to do that once a month.

I have not made any restore discs.

The you tube video shows exactly what comes up on my screen.

then contact sony for a repair
    its a known hardware fault
no messing with software will help
got a Vaio fixed myself the same way

Thanks for your help and advice. Sony are saying that I should erase all my data on the laptop and go for a full recovery which I dont think will solve the problem. I can see this will take some time until they agree there is a hardware problem.

    Many thanks

all I did was email them this

    http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/news-item.pl?mdl=VGNFZ290&news_id=349

and requested they treat my UK machine the same way.
they sent out a box,I packaged it up and they collected it
was turned around in under 2 weeks IIRC

Glad you brought that up, custardy. Was going to point out it was about the time these GPUs were fitted.

I have contacted Sony about getting my laptop repaired.

They they called me this morning wanting a £60 logistics charge before they pick it up even to look at it.

I told them to forget it as they should be doing it at no charge due the chip failure as otherwise might as well buy a new laptop.

    found my old email
    Dear Mr. Custardy
    Thank you for contacting us.
From the fault description you have provided, we understand that your vaio needs to be picked up for in warranty repair. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Pick Up Instructions and Terms and conditions :
    1. The courier will come to collect the VAIO during office hours – it is not possible to specify a particular timeframe.
    2. Sony is not responsible for any data loss – it is strongly recommended that you back up all data, settings and applications before having the VAIO collected.
    3. Remove all peripherals from your VAIO (eg. Memory Sticks, DVD’s, dongles etc.)
    4. Remove the A/C Adaptor and battery - these are not needed unless there is a suspected power issue.
    5. Ensure the collection box is sealed in your presence, and take the end-user copy of the AWB as proof of collection. Do not give the VAIO to the courier if the courier is without a box.
    6. The turnaround time is 8 working days on average. This will increase if the correct parts are not available at the time of repair.
    7. If the VAIO is diagnosed as falling outside of the terms of guarantee, then the repair will be treated as 'Out Of Warranty' and will be chargeable. The repair team will then contact you with a quote. If you decide not to proceed with the repair after receiving the repair quote, then a 'return unrepaired' fee will be due, which covers diagnosis and logistics costs. The cost for this would be: ******* including VAT.
    8. Once you have accepted these terms and conditions, the collection will go ahead on the agreed date.
If you accept the terms and conditions as listed above, please reply with the following:
    1. Your preferred dates for collection - please know that we can collect on weekdays only.
    2. The address for collection and return of the VAIO – please indicate if you require separate collection and return addresses.
    3. The serial number of the VAIO. http://genesis.sony-europe.com/instranet/ccil_sony/selfservice/index.jsp?DocId=42410&l=en_GB
    4. The date of purchase of the VAIO.
    5. The installation language of the VAIO.
    6. Your mobile phone number, and another preferred contact number.
    7. Your login and password, and the BIOS password if you have set one.
    8. Your email address (providing you can access your email without your VAIO).

Should you have any further questions or inquiries, please feel free to reply to this email or contact us on

I am experiencing issues with the above Vaio.I attribute this to the Nvidia Geforce 8400 GT graphics chipset. This seems to be a well documented Nvidia production fault. I am getting random black screens, zigzag lines on he screen accompanied with a high brightness and very sluggish graphic performance.Windows also reports an unresolvable issue with the Geforce 8400 GT. I note that Sony America have an annoucement that increased the warrenty on the VGC-LT2xx to 3 years. I assume this is

my original email was snipped in their reply.don't know if i still have it
