Paypal for collection items

Hi

I have something listed on ebay and have been offered a BIN price for the item and some other items I had not yet listed.

The buyer wishes to collect but only pay by paypal ( its for over £100) . Would you refuse as its for some items not on ebay and they wish to collect?

I would not be happy with paypal and collection on an item of that value due to the paypal on collection scam, but technically you cannot refuse the payment if this was a collection only item

If it is a collection only item I would gently ask the buyer if they would allow you to refund the payment and pay cash instead, but if they say no you are a bit stuck. That would leave you either risking the scam (and I have risked it on an item at £60 before as the seller was local and had a very good reason for using paypal), or you refund anyway and refuse to sell.

If you refuse to sell then you have your fees still to pay and may well get a neg, low stars and a non performing seller complaint.

EDIT: If however this item was not a collection only one then you are fine as you can isist on posting the items and have full seller protection if you do the normal with tracking and such like. I would be very suspicious of a buyer offering paypal and wanting to collect an item that is NOT collection only. I would go as far as to block them from bidding.

do not allow paypal on a collection item, the buyer can come and collect then say they havent recieved and they can claim the money back, it happened to me once and i was £900out of pocket, luckily though i was wrongly advised so after weeks of ringing about 3 times a day i finally got my money back but i learned the hard way.

Its honestly not worth it because the buyer is covered but you will have no cover at all, if they wish you to post and they say they never recieved it you upload a copy of your postage reciept and that cover's you but without postage reciept they will not accept anything.

A copy of a postage receipt is totally worthless if the buyer claims that they didn't receive the item.
You need to be able to show that the goods were delivered and this must be viewable online so that paypal can see it, and if the goods are valued at over £150, you must also be able to show the signature of the person who signed for the delivery.

Maybe they think that paying cash is immoral? :rotfl:

I can see a valid reason for paying electronically for high value items. Carrying a hundred pounds on you in cash is rather daunting and if I have that sort of money on me I usually bank it ASAP. If my card is stolen, I can cancel it. If cash is stolen, it's totally gone. I feel much safer paying for that sort of item on the high street with a card or, occasionally, from sites online where electronic payment is the norm; it goes double for carrying cash around an unfamiliar residential district. Even the risk of loss is too great for me on that score.

That said, the risk on the seller is high enough that I would insist on posting on this occasion; as Soo says, if you don't specify on the listing that the buyer can collect you are under no obligation to let them.

If you do sell on eBay, you have to accept Paypal. The best thing to do is not to sell high value collection only items on the site. Trying to have your cake (eBay's buyer pool) and eat it (refuse Paypal on collection) is a bit stupid, IMO, given the sanctions eBay can put on your account in the event of the buyer being genuine and taking offence at effectively being called a scammer.

The other week I accidentally paid by paypal for a collection only item. I'm so used to paying instantly for postage items that I just went through the process without thinking. Feeling a bit guilty I offered to reimburse the seller her paypal feels but she politely said that it was nice of me to offer but it wasn't necessary.

In theory for a few more weeks I could claim "item not received" and rip her off. But her protection is that the item is exactly as described/in good condition for its age and I'm an honest person.

On the occasions when I have sold a collection only item and received payment by paypal, I request that they sign a receipt form stating that it was collected and as described etc etc.

I got some odd looks but no-one refused.

These are worthless in Paypal's eyes and the buyer would still get refunded if they claimed non-receipt.

Out of interest what do you think having a bit of paper with a signature of an unknown person actually does to help guard against the scam?

The scam is actually theft. The world doesn't begin and end with ebay/paypal.
If you take reasonable precautions, you can still accept paypal for collection items.
