What's the easiest way to clean a crockpot?

Hi all

Does anyone have a low-elbow-grease method for cleaning the crockpot of a slow cooker, please?

I've searched the mega index but its not there.

I've always soaked it for several hours in water with fairy liquid, but it still needs some good elbow grease to get it clean and I'm struggling with health issues at the moment which make me a bit weak :(

Sometimes, when it's really hard to clean, I put washing up liquid and hot water in the pot, then put it on the hob and simmer for a while - always works for me!

If elbow grease is a problem, then stick with the soaking - you'll only get off a thin layer each time you do a little scrubbing, but you will get there!
Soak with soda bic for awhile - that often helps. Also soaking for more than an hour or so doesn't help, but as good a scrub as you can manage, followed by another soaking will help.

    Thanks all.

I'm going to try two things: bio washing powder, and soak-scrub-soak-scrub.

    Cheers

You can use those roasting bag thingys in slow cookers, there was some chat about them on the toughy thread.

I put the ceramic insert of my crockpot and the lid in my dishwasher with other pot and plates. Even if it doesn't make it prisitine it does soften up any residue to the extent that it only needs a wipe with a dishwashing sponge after it has been run through a cycle to make it perfectly clean again. Is there a reason not to do this? Its miles more effective than steeping in washing powder or boiling it up on the hob IMO

    Thanks Byatt - great idea.

Nicki - I only have a mini worktop style dishwasher, so the crockpot takes up a lot of space. Good point though. Whenever I've used the dishwasher the crockpot has been pretty easy to finish off afterwards.

Loads of ideas now - thanks everyone!
  • I soak mine with bio soap powder before putting in the dishwasher.

The Americans have slowcooker liners however I haven't yet managed to find a UK supplier.
