'New' car problems

Just bought a high mileage Ford Mondeo (81k), when the garage MOT'd it they discovered a problem with what they thought was the battery. It turned out to be in the Convers+ unit (the speedo cluster with the colour display) which they replaced. However this new speedo has only 40k on it, the dealer made a note on the invoice with the correct mileage on it and I signed it. They sold it to us as 80k mileage so there's no fraud there but do I have any obligation to have the mileage put right? also, there is a rear brake light out which casts doubt on the MOT and the MOT certificate has the 40k mileage on it. Should the MOT have the correct mileage on?

I'm going to phone up tomorrow and invoke the 28 day warrenty on the brake light, just wondering if I've been sold a lemon

So the digits on the mileage count are incorrect and a break light out... doesn't sound like a lemon :huh:

There's no obligation for the mileage to be put right as far as I know, if it bothers you can take it to a Ford dealer and get them to increase the mileage.

The brake light could well have been working when the MOT was done and I imagine the MOT tester just took the mileage as it was shown on the odometer, which is what they are supposed to do.

A brake light bulb costs about £2, you could sort that yourself, the warranty's more for serious faults.

Shouldn't be, you have a signed receipt that states that the clocks were changed so as long as you're honest about the mileage when you come to sell it there should be no problem.

you will have a mileage discrepancy on HPI from last years odemeter reading to this years -40k reading even if you have the mileage increased at a dealers or a auto electricians so there no hiding the fact something has been done in the clocks department, so come selling i would open and as truethfull (with private sale or a part ex to a dealer) as you can providing the proof you have.

the rear bulb is a 2 minute job for £2.00 just repolace it yourself.

80K isnt high miles thesedays, unless its under 3 years old and even then you know its been serviced with its history provided.

daft question but does the car not store it's overall mileage anywhere else other than the speedo unit? Seems very easy to get a high mileage car and pay £300 for a dashboard unit with only a few thousands miles on and swap them over. One clocked car

It's not that easy these days. The MOT is now computerised and keeps a log of the mileage of each vehicle year by year, so it easy to see if a car goes from 80k to 40k between MOT's.

Not if you've got a receipt from the car dealer showing a new speedo unit has been fitted.

The alternative is to have the mileage 'adjusted' by one of those mileage 'correction' firms which can be found on Google.

If you're really worried about it, take it to Ford and get it adjusted to the correct mileage.
