tomtom map updates?

I have a tomtom xl2 satnav device whcih I bought in NOvember 2011.
As far as I can see I am currently getting map updates for my device. But whenever I connect it to tomtom home app I get a upsell to get 1 years worth of updates.
Now sure what the deal is. This article suggests that I will get map updates for life. But I'm a bit puzzled as to why tomtom are advertising map updates for £35 or something.
