Hi
Hope someone can help me with this. I recently signed up to get broadband with efhbroadband. They sent me a router and after a few teething problems it seems to work fine now.
I didn't know what to do about an email account as I had previously been on AOL and didn't want to keep paying for this just to keep an email account. I also had a free email account with Virgin so I kept this one. However, I have just discovered that I can receive emails but I can't send them!
This is the error I get but being a total novice where computers are concerned I haven't got a clue what it means.
The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'XXXXXXXX'. Subject 'xxxxxxxxx', Account: 'mail.virgin.net', Server: 'mail.virgin.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 RCPT TO:<xxxxxxx> Relaying not allowed - please use SMTP AUTH', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79
Can someone please tell me how I sort this out?
Thanks!

You need to go into the account properties and change the outgoing (smtp) server to efh.
If you're using OE go to Tools -> Accounts, click on the 'Mail' tab, click on your active account in the box below and click 'Properties.'
Go to the 'Servers' tab and in the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) box, type mail.efhcontrol.com then Apply.

Hi TOG
Have just been on the efh forum and I found out there that you have to sign up for a separate email account with them first before you can send mail with them!
You're right as well though - once you have paid for your email account you then have to sort the settings out as you described above.
Thanks a lot for your help.Nice to save.0 -
Layla - that's quite unusual. Normally, you can access the SMTP server simply by using your ISP. For example, my ISP is Freeserve but my email account is with Blueyonder. I don't pay Blueyonder anything at all and I don't have an email account with Freeserve.
My email settings are
Recieve - mail.blueyonder.co.uk
Send - smtp.freeserve.com
It's also unusual that, having paid for efh BB you now have to pay for efh email too - normally you get an email account (or five) with your BB provider (or ISP).
You may have an "unusual" arrangement, but worth checking out before you part with any more cash.

OK - just checked their site and there is no information about the smtp server .... odd. Maybe you do have to pay .... odd, again!

Layla. The message you are getting is because the default email address you are using to send mail is the Virgin P.A.Y.G. one. I am in the same position as you regarding Virgin.net and because you do not use your account regularly they leave the account "live" but will not allow you to send from there. I occasionaly get the same message when I forget, and try to reply to an email I have received via Virgin without changing my address in the "From" box. You just need to change your default address and continue to "receive only" from Virgin. I don't think this happens if you pay for an account with Virgin but only on the P.A.Y.G. accounts.0

djohn2002uk wrote:I should have pointed out that the message clearly points to the Virgin mail server being responsible for the rejection. You should be able to set up an account with your new ISP otherwise BT Internet will allow you to have at least 2 accounts with them free of charge.
I used to have an account with Virgin years ago, when i was using dial-up. I could send email when i used their dial-up connection, but not if i used a different service, although i could read the email with any ISP.0 -

Layla,
This is a similar problem to that which I had when I moved from Tesco to btinternet. It can depend on who you get on their (respective) service desks as to the quality of advice that you get. I haven't heard of needing to pay to allow throughput of emails through an ISP's SMTP server but that doesn't mean that it doesn't happen ;-)
Anyway, back to what Toxteth was talking about. The problem tends to exist because you want to use a (originally) dial-up email account through a broadband provider. You should still be able to accomplish this by either using their webmail (i.e. the dial-up provider's webmail page) on the internet or by changing the settings in your outlook so that the incoming POP3 address is the original dial-up server's address and the outgoing SMTP address is that of your new ISP provider's SMTP server.
This way you should be able to retain your old email address and use it through your new broadband provider without the need to expand their service (at a cost) to include new email addresses.0 -
Virgin will NOT under any circumstances allow you to use an email account with them for SENDING emails whilst connected through a different provider.0
