Most councils will have over 1,000 roads in their area and will prioritise on condition and usage of road. An access road on to a 500 home estate will take priority over a cul de sac.

As others have said, do not withhold payment of your CT, unless you enjoy paying court fees and having bailiffs knocking at your door.

Just a correction, the don't actually 'take you to court' - it is a fast track that requires no response from the debtor, and is an administrative process where there's a statutory addition of 10% for being late, then the Bailiffs are sent in at a later date. No need to wait for your day in court.

I'm a council tax officer, you absolutely can have your day in court and ask to see the judge - but potholes are not a valid defense against non-payment of council tax.

I don't think "Take you to court" means anything more than we are bringing your name before the judge, the only people actually (physically) taken to court are people under arrest and transported there by the police or custody officer aren't they?

If you can afford it and promise to behave, yes.

    Helpful post.

OP, not paying your council tax is not an option, but if everyone on your street was to collectively pressure your local councillors you might see some action.

We're elected to sort things like this. I've put part of my £120k grant into fixing potholes on an ex-council estate last year, using the Tesco contractors rather than the Council contractors. 18 months on, they're as good as new!

You vote for us, then forget us. Most Cllrs work full-time, but are available during the day (I know that 4 of the 6 on County in my town run their own businesses, and another 1 is retired)

It's County Council that you need to bug!

They seem to be available even when allegedly on holiday in Italy eh cllr mind you the above alleged County/District and Town cllr took home more than £50k in one year in allowances and expenses as an alleged cllr so that plus running an alleged business I'd certainly bug this particular alleged cllr. :D
