Need some information/advice

Afternoon,

My girlfriend and I are just about to move out of our parents and into a rented property. I am working and earning £15000 before deductions and my partner has just come out of college and is currently unemployed.

I am wanting to know if and what I am entitled to. There seems to be different options available such as tax credits and housing benefits. I have done an online tax credits calculator in my name and it came out at £800 a year but when I did it in my girlfriends name it came out at over £3000. Which has completely baffled me and I don't know what we are entitled to and going to get.

Please help with information or advice!

Thanks in advance.

  • For a start, you need to put your details into the benefits calculator as a couple, not as individuals. Any benefits you may be entitled to will depend on your joint household income.

    How old are you both?

Just a thought, but would you not be better off waiting until your girlfriend has a job, you have two salaries coming into the household - when you can actually afford to move out as a couple & live independently?

I echo the comments of SAS above.

Why don't you wait for your gf to get a job so she can contribute?

How about no longer being masochistic?
    How about remembering your divinity?
How about unabashedly bawling your eyes out?
How about not equating death with stopping?

No need, there will probably be a benefit they can claim so she doesn't have to. These forums are making me more cynical by the day.

whilst living with her parents your partner will qualify for income related JSA (assuming they do not meet the requirements for contribution based) when living with you they will get no payment as partners support each other.
If you are over 25 and work more than 30 hours you could apply for working tax credits as a couple.
Depending on the LHA for a one-bedroom place in your area you may get a little help towards rent but they will include all your income and tax credits in the calculation

Cheers for the replies guys. I would've stayed with parents but unfortunately that isn't an option for various reasons. I'm 25 and my girlfriend is 19 .
  • Go for it. You'll be skint, but you might also be happy.... and that's priceless! If you can't be irresponsible when you are young, you will never have the opportunity again!

If you wait until your GF has a job, you can look for a flat which is convenient for both of your journeys to work. If you get somewhere before then it may limit her options for employment.

I do appreciate the replies guy, but I'm just asking about what we are entitled to. I'm am educated to post grad level so don't really need the life coaching. Staying at home isn't an option so it rent or be homeless.
