Money Stolen

Just checked my halifax banking today and around £560 has been stolen from my account. Ive contacted my bank and they have manage to luckily get the money reclaimed and my accounts have been frozen until I get a new card.

Even though the money has been reclaimed I still can't believe this happened to me. I am kind of a PC expert and I know the tricks and scams that exist on the internet aswell as the programs like keyloggers and stealers which can get this kind of infomation. I think that either a online datebase was hacked like steam by valve or my I put my card in an 'infected' ATM machine. I am now going to stop using my card in certain shops etc. and start using cash more often.

My money was stolen in the Bahamas in this high end hotel called paradise island. I hope these low life fraudsters get kicked out of this hotel.

They say we have all this security on are banking infomation but I think we need more with all I know even teenagers can easily steal our hard owned money.

How will you know which shops to stop using your card at? A better idea would be to use a credit card wherever possible, as it's then (at least in the first instance) the bank's money that is being stolen, not yours.

You'll probably find that that's another part of the scam and someone has paid someone to book a hotel who then used your stolen card details to book it. They will then turn up and find out they don't have a room, when dealing with stolen credit cards you'd want to turn it to cash as quickly as possible.

It doesn't sound like you used a tampered ATM as they would have your PIN and would have instead just made cash withdrawals. Probably what happened instead is that they either used your details for an online booking or did a magnetic stripe transaction. You can find out from your bank what type of transaction it was and then try to figure out how it was stolen.

There are loads of ways in which a fraudster can get hold of your card details - even by guesswork. They will create and try lots of different card numbers automatically until one is successful. It's impossible to know how they got your details.

Your suggestion of using cash more often is illogical.

You are more likely to be mugged for the cash, or lose the cash, than you are to have your card fraudulently used again. The best way of making purchases is to put as much as possible on a cashback credit card, and pay it off in full each month to avoid paying interest.

I think all the recent high-profile "anonymous" stuff has made people think most teenagers are highly-skilled computer hackers!
