ENGINE MANAGEMENT LIGHT IS ON BUT ONLY DUE TO THE FACT THE EGR VALVE HAS BEEN BYPASSED AND THE LIGHT NOT DELETED YET

If so, if you could translate this in to layman terms I would be very grateful :)

EGR is exhaust gas recirculation, were some of the exhaust gases get recirculated back into the inlet manifold to help reduce emissions.

Looks like someone has by past the valve and the ecu has thrown up a fault code.

    What car?

Think it was a Ford Mondeo (saved quite a few cars so will need to check).

Is this a good or bad thing?

Is what a good or bad thing, saving a Mondeo or the fact that the EGR has been by past?

In this case I don't think saving a Mondeo is a bad thing, in by passing the EGR valve and causing the ECU light to be lite is a bad thing as you now have fault light.

I suspect the EGR valve was faulty and instead of replacing it, they have by past it.....doubt it will make it run any different, maybe have higher emissions when you take it to an MOT test now tho.

what they have more than likely done is not by pass it but fit an EGR blanking plate.

I did this to my vectra as the EGR on them are prone to seizing.

Some of these plates have a hole in the middle to fool the ecu into thinking the egr is working properly.

If the plate fitted to the mondeo does not have a hole in then thats why its throwing a code.

you need to locate EGR vlave find where the plate is fitted, remove and drill hole in plate around 6 -8 mm then reift plate.

then take the car for a run and the light should go out.

    Sounds like an Ebay advert.

    Q. The fault as described isn't too much of an issue, so why hasn't the seller addressed it?

    A. Because it is a much more serious issue

    I would avoid it completely.

egr s should not be blanked, they are there for a very important reason on todays modern engine, look it up

true - but they are prone to failure - especially on cars used for short journeys only.

people who have removed / blanked them off report an increase in both power and economy.

you need to have the EGR written out of the ECU through a re-coding exercise if you do this - make the car think it never had an EGR to miss!

if you are looking at buying the car and don't understand the content of this thread, walk away from that car - its almost certainly not for you because it has been tinkered with and there will be an abundance of other Mondeo diesels on the market which are all standard!

Blanking the EGR valave is a well-known method of tuning various diesel engines, along with decatting and fitting free flow stainless exhausts. Getting rid of an EGR valve on a vehicle like a VW Caravelle or Transporter does absolutely no harm and improves air flow, which, when you decat and fit a stainless steel exhaust, allows free air flow and improved power and torque.

Take a look on some of the specialist forums like the VW T4 /T5 forum and look at their threads on EGR Valves- it is nonsense to say they should not be blanked off, they were only ever installed to keep within EU regs, same as fitting a cat to diesels, and no harm is done by blanking them off. Check the VW forum info and have a read at exactly why it may actually improve your engines longevity before making any assumptions.

Don't you actually mean the DPF?? They are prone to expensive failure when diesel cars make short journeys only.

EGR valves coke up regardless of distances travelled, long or short, over time.

its not assumptions, and were not talking decat and stainless, to assume theyre only fitted to reduce NOx is wrong, and to say blanking them off does no harm is wrong, for one your increasing the combustion temparature, two, your increasing the temparature on the exhaust valves vastly shortening there [ and there guides ] overall life, and finally three without getting too involved [ re technical] your putting your foot further down with these increased temparatures, millions of pounds spent in the design lab and someone puts in a cut out bean tin :rotfl:
