Help Updated software now ipad not working

I have been using my 3g without a sim card for a year now. Just updated to latest software and it seems to have reverted back to original settings. Problem being I cannot get past the set up as it says the sim card inserted in the ipad does not appear to be supported (there is no sim card) Any advice appreciated.
