Contents/building cover - how many years??

Hi
I am in the process of getting my home insurance sorted. I have been in my present house (owned) for coming up for 2 years and in the previous house for a further 3.

The question is this: I moved into this house when separated from my (soon-to-be-ex) husband and we had several years of no claims discount. Can I include these years in my policy for this year?

Thanks very much :D

    Who was the policyholder?

Most insurers do not actually do NCD for home insurance but simply claims/ incident history which is a separate thing.

If you werent named on the policy you could of cause say you were claim free but may struggle proving this if you were challenged. It would be best to speak to the insurer in question and make sure they'd accept your history giving the circumstances.

    Thanks for the reply.

The policy holder would have been a joint one. It actually makes a difference if I put in 5 years for contents and building on these comparison sites as opposed to the 2 since my move here. The different is about £20 which is not huge on the scale of things but still enough!

Bearing in mind my insurance renewal quote with existing supplier has gone up from £202 last year to a MASSIVE £383.99 :exclamati (with no change to circumstances or items purchased, etc.)

Shop around, as always, re the price.

If you are a joint policyholder it shouldn't be a problem but you are going to need to have a copy of a letter (eg renewal letter) from your current insurers showing the claims history/ ncd

Is there a definition for 'no claims' on your insurer's website or current policy documents? If not then what is to stop you from saying that you have not had any claims in the last few years (especially true if you have not had a policy at all)?
