Are there any benefits in having a new Ipad over the Ipad2. Also am I ever likely to use more than the lowest memory? All advice appreciated.

There isn't much difference between the two. I have a new iPad that replaced an iPad 2 (work upgrade) and I cannot really notice the difference. The screen is a little sharper, but not enough to warrant the extra money.
The memory is more interesting: I would have said that 16gb was enough and indeed I have the 16gb version. But if you like games, they are starting to be huge. So I have 3gb/music, 4gb movies and that just leaves 8gb for applications. One of the games I just downloaded was 1.2gb....0 -
Good advice. Thanks very much.0

I have an Ipad 2 with 32Gb of memory. Slight wish I had 64Gb as I work away a lot and mine gets filled up with my music and films quickly.
Unless you get a good deal with an Ipad 2 then I would get the newest model.
Apparently it's quicker with a few updates and improvements0 -
iPad 2 is lame compared to most tablets on the market these days. Underpowered and the screen has an embarassingly low resolution. The third generation iPad is much more powerful and actually has a decent screen. Go to an Apple store and compare the screens - there's a huge difference in quality. If you must stick with Apple products, go for the third generation iPad, it's much better and almost competes with the higher-end Android tablets.poppy100

Ipad 2 and the new iPad are most certainly not "lame" "underpowered" or any other such rubbish - I am delighted with my iPad 2 and it has almost replaced my laptop as my main computing device. The screen is bright, it is fast, connections are seamless and easy and its just a total pleasure to use. Friends with new iPads who replaced their iPad 2 with the new one have been a bit disappointed as there is really not much of a difference in ordinary everyday use. The 4G aspect we cannot use in the UK anyway and the retina display while excellent comes after an already excellent iPad 2 display. The cameras on the new iPad are better than iPad 2.
iPads are still the leading tablets, so unless you have an irrational hatred of all things Apple and want an Android tablet, take a look at the iPads together at an Apple store - they still sell both and iPad 2 is available at a considerable discount due to the new one being out - and see which one you prefer. We are all different!!.
If you do decide on an iPad I would buy a wireless / sim card iPad, not the cheapest wireless one as that is themost flexible option, and go for the largest storage capcity - 64GB if funds allow. No such thing as too much drive space on any computing device, you will find a way of filling it!!!0 -
I would not upgrade from an iPad2 to the iPad 3rd gen however if buying new I would certainly get the 3rd gen over 2nd. They are a little bit faster and have a much better display.
As to memory, well that depends what you will use it for. I dont use mine for games or music and happy to load just a couple of films/ TV programmes on it to cover a few days use so the 16 gig is fine for me. I simply couldnt load my complete collection of music of films on it as that would be 500 gig or so0 -
Get the ipad2, simply because it's quicker, slicker and has a better camera.0
