Moving house - BT line?!!

Hi,
My apologies if this appears to be a dumb question, but I hope someone can clarify this for me. I'm hoping to move into my new home next Friday and the vendor has a BT line which she uses. I don't want to use a landline for the time being, as I want to wait a few months and see how my costs pan out. I currently survive on a PAYG mobile. I may not be able to afford a landline for some years.
What scares me is BT sending me a line rental bill if I do nothing. Therefore, I think I should ring BT to explain my situation. What will they do? Do they just flick a switch at the exchange to make my line dead? If so, will I have to pay a big connection charge when I do finally want a landline? If so, would it be better to pay the minimum rental and keep the line live? I can get a cheap phone to just plug in I'm sure. Has anyone been in this situation before, or are able to offer advice?
Thanks in anticipation.

The vendor should cancel the BT line and refund him/her the difference. Request that your vendor do this before they move.
Then you won't end up with a BT line. You can always activate it for free in the future if you change your mind at a later date.
Make sure the vendor has cancelled the line when you move by checking that it is not active with your own phone also!Errors of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it. - Jefferson0 -
Hi Megan...
the previous tenants will be responsible for the phone line, and it is up to them to cancel it as the account will be in their name and they are responsible for any calls.
Even if the line is still active when you move in, you are still not responsible for the charges!
I would imagine that by the time you move in the line will already have been disconnected. It doesn't cost anything to get it reconnected in the future...
