Council Tax Benefit backdating

I've been paying full council tax for the last two years, not realising that I could claim council tax benefit. I've just been told that I can only claim backdated benefit up to 6 months and cannot give not knowing as my reason for not claiming earlier. Anyone know how I can argue the case to have my benefit backdated longer than 6 months?

You can't unless you could possibly show you repeatedly claimed during that period and were wrongly refused.
Not knowing you could claim in not a valid reason for backdating.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -

I'm not sure the Small Biz board is the place for this, so ...
