Car Insurance Cancellation - Can I do it?

Ok so my mother has a car insurance policy. She want's to cancel the policy because she now needs to insure her partner as well. If she is to add him to this policy she will pay a lot of money.

If she takes out a new policy then they can both be insured for a lot cheaper! :T

BUT

She called the current insurer to ask for cancellation, obviously they said she needed to pay X cabcellation charge. But then they went on to say she needed to pay at least X number of months as there was a minimum amount due for any policy.

Does anyone know if this is usual or if she can get out of this in any way.

We just want to try and help her save IF she can...

I would suggest she has a look at her policy booklet/document. It should detail what the cancellation procedure is.
