Report asked for

got a letter from DLA saying they've written to my Psychiatrist. This in relation to a reclaim.

I have never had my Psychiatrist approached so have I failed to give a clear picture this time? What will my Psychiatrist be asked? Rather worried as he does not know how things are for me day to day.

Thank you

If there has not been recent evidence of your illness from those managing it then yes I would expect this evidence to be obtained.

Do you see anyone regularly from CMHT? If so they will be able to inform the report by your psychiatrist.
If not, then as above, try to make an urgent appointment.

He is not the best guy to sit down and speak to. I only get 20 mins every 3 months to speak. Which feels as if we go roubd in circles.

If I need to appeal can I give a detailed written account of my daily needs as well as an account from my carer?

I can see a bad report to be fair as he has not got a clue on how my mental health affects me day to day. Even if I tell him I doubt he will remember as never rememberes half the stuff I mention!

Could I still get DLA minus the backing of my Psychiatrist?

I have yet to find a consultant in any field that is willing to sit down and give up his time for the DWP and write a report for them.

Most just simply return the forms telling the DWP to contact the GP as they are the ones that get paid to do these reports. A consultant doesn't receive a fee from the DWP but your GP does.

Some will also add (as mine does) that he has more important things to do like saving lives than to waste a morning answering the drivel that finds its way on to his desk every day!

Did you not do this in the first place?

I'd try not to worry too much. Psychiatrists are very used to having requests from DWP for DLA claims for their patients.

If it turns out you have to appeal, then contact your nearest branch of MIND for help as they are very good at this sort of thing.

In the meantime to put your mind at rest, you could write a quick letter to your psychiatrist roughly outlining the problems you have on a day to day basis so he will have the info at hand when the request from DWP comes in.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Does that not leave it open to fraud in some cases though?

Any patient can tell any psychiatrist anything they want, doesn't mean it's actually true!

And I agree with the poster further up, if the psychiatrist spends all his time writing letter to the DWP when does he get the time to actually see patients?

No more than anybody going to their GP and telling them how their disability affects them on a daily basis, be it a mental or a physical disability. We all know that some people will over elaborate the problems they have in an effort to qualify for certain benefits, but that is human nature and will apply to any medical professional that a patient is consulting.
