account has been hacked

I opened an account with mail order company A week later got a email that my account was closed. Rang them up the said somebody had my account delails and had bought a ipad to be delivered to another address They had dome some security check and stopped order . Iwas asked if i wanted another account no i said no and paid off remaining balance. then about two hours later got a phone call international from mail order company I put phone down rang mail order company said it was not them. how common is this
