We will be moving into our new home soon.
What I want to know is whether We will have to pay any charges to bt to set up a phone line with them?
There is a line at the house that the current owners are using, but as i;ve never had an account with bt will they charge me an installation fee?
Any help appreciated.

I don't think you will be liable for connection fees if the line has been used by the previous owners/tenants.
I had to pay £125  as my flat is brand new and the line had never been used before...

If there is an existing line, then no, they shouldn't charge.
In fact, in our current flat the existing BT line hadn't been used for 13 years. They tested it remotely when we moved in, and boom, we were up and running

I dont think charge you an installiation fee if the line in not disconnected .You need to take over the line at the same time the current owner moves .0

it will be free, but if you haven't ever had anything from bt before bear in mind that you will have to pay direct debit with minimum payments for a few months. My OH signed up for BT for us, and was told even though our line rental would be £11pm and our calls would probably only amount to a couple of quid, that since he's never been with them before he'd have to pay minimum direct debit of £30pm. After the six months or year (can't remember which sorry) 'probationary' period was up he could then change this. Just so as you know about this 'hidden' cost:j Ready to take control of my life! :j

I took on a BT line when I moved, first contact with BT for 11 years. They did a credit check while I was on the phone to them. No deposit required, direct debit set up with no minimum payment.
You don't have to take the line from the minute you move in. You can arrange a date with them for the line to go live.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
