accident protection policy

Due to a name change and moving I've recently tracked down an accident protection policy that I've been paying by direct debit for about 17 years. Could this be a PPI? How would I find out if it is? I can't recall taking it out - but 17 years is a long time.
If not then this policy isn't really relevant to me anymore as I live a very sedentary life due to having M.E. so does anyone know if it would be possible to change/swap it to a Life Insurance plan - I don't want to lose all the money I've paid in if I just cancel it?
Hope all that makes sense :)

    Unlikely to be PPI.

How did you buy the contract?

Unlikely to be able to convert to anything else.

You need to read the policy documentation to see what is covered and what (if anything) you can do with it.

    Thank you kingstreet.
As it's not something I would have shopped for I think I would have bought it through my bank - by persuasion - when I went in for an Annual Review and I did have a bank loan about 18 years ago which made me question this being a PPI.
I have a copy of the policy, which appears to be very tight and I possibly wouldn't qualify for a claim as I have now got M.E., plus it expires when I reach the age of 75 - 20 years away.
I know its not the norm but do you think its worth asking them if there's a chance I could swap the policy to Life Insurance?

    Could this be a PPI?

No. It is probably an accident protection policy.

17 years ago. No wonder you cant remember.

You cant change a policy from one thing to another. However, you can stop that one and apply for different one.

I suggest you cut your hand off then or something like that. ;)

Most people are happy not to claim on policies like this unless they have to.

There is more to insurance than PPI. Banks also retail more than PPI.
I possibly wouldn't qualify for a claim as I have now got M.E

Did you have that 17 years ago? its only at point of sale when it matters.
I know its not the norm but do you think its worth asking them if there's a chance I could swap the policy to Life Insurance?

No. Accident protection policies are issued by general insurance companies. Life assurance is issued by life assurance companies. Two totally different things issued by different types of insurers.

I appreciate the information but not the sarcasm ........if we were all experts you wouldn't have a job and there would be no need for sites like this. I hope you have a different attitude toward your 'paying' customers:eek:
