Profiting from unsolicited calls ?

I'm sure we've all had our fair share of unsolicited marketing calls and we all know that with 0870/0871 numbers there's a potential kickback to the called party.....

I've noticed that it's possible to get one of these numbers free of charge, divert it to your home phone number, and then if you need to dish out your number to anyone, you could give them the 0870 number, and rake in the 3p/minute or whatever to offset against other call costs :D

Not exactly moneysaving, but going at least part way to giving the companies that insist on having 0870 numbers a tastelet of their own medicine :j

I read about this on another forum. A provider of these numbers pointed out that not one of several other members had earned enough in 6 months to even buy a stamp.

If I get a 0871 number it will be for something useful - ring a foreign mobile cheap

Still - costs the lovely marketing types calling you to try and flog you double glazing etc. if they even try.... they may of course skip over your number as they can't tell where you are....

I think that telesales people will still get the ordinary number from the phonebook. The only people that will know the 0871 number will be the ones you've told. Best to go ex-directory or register with TPS
  • Was more thinking of the number of times you're asked for a phone number for other purposes (like couriers, insurance etc) - and they sometimes show a reluctance to accept "sod off" as an answer :)
