How to connect turntable to stero

Does anyone know if its possible to connect a turntable to a stereo that only has aux inputs, no phono inputs? Ive not physicaly tried it, but Im assuming that aux inputs dont cater for RIAA signals from turntables, or am I wrong?

Yes, buy a Phono Stage to go between the TT and the Amp.

Buy one appropriate to the type of cartridge you have (MM or MC).

Do you have any budget for this? You can get cheap and cheerful basic ones from the likes of Maplin, but also - the sky's the limit on price, depending on what's appropriate for the level of TT and Amp you have. What are you trying to connect to what?

No decisions made yet on what turntable. Its an 18th birthday present for my son from his grandmother (son has got it in his head that records are "the thing to have" and has bought a few with the expectation of playing them on a turntable oneday).
Probable budget £200 ish.Do you have any reccomendations for good quality turntables + Phono stage? Its a long time since I bought my hi-fi so Im well out of touch on whats hot and whats not these days.

The Pro-Ject range seem to get a good name, the entry-level Rega models have always been a good bet, and both of these makes do their own phono stages too.

Some TTs are available with built-in Phono stages, but these tend to be at the bargain basement end of the scale.
